What works

  • Round-the-clock online booking with change/refund and easy account recovery
  • Pre-ordered meals available across a decent range of options
What to plan around
  • Booking closes on the day of the flight, so last-minute changes are hard

A Spring Airlines review

Planning a trip and want to know whether Spring Airlines is worth booking with? With so many carriers offering similar in-flight services, it’s worth knowing what you’re getting. This Spring Airlines review covers the flights, fares, food and baggage so you can decide whether it’s a keeper or one to avoid.

Spring Airlines flights

Spring Airlines offers both domestic and international flights, bookable online or at the airport. Domestic destinations include Shanghai, Kunming, Shenzhen, Lanzhou, Harbin, Dalian and Urumqi, among others. Internationally, you can reach Macau, Seoul, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jeju, Osaka, Krabi and Chengdu, among others. Booking runs around the clock on desktop, smartphone or tablet. The catch: if you don’t book early enough you may have to pick another date, because the airline closes booking on the day of the flight.

Price of booking tickets

Domestic fares are very affordable, some as low as $14.90, though quotes change with demand. International fares are also fair, and the airline runs promotional pricing from time to time that cuts the cost significantly. The downside is that prices climb once the promotional period ends.

In-flight food

The crew offers on-board meals depending on what’s in season, and you can book a meal between four and 36 hours before the flight, from snacks to set menus. If you don’t order early enough, though, you may have to eat whatever happens to be available.

Spring Airlines baggage

Each passenger gets a 7kg carry-on for free, provided the bag is within 40cm × 30cm × 20cm. Checked luggage beyond the stated allowance costs extra, as does any bag that breaches the size or weight limits, and all baggage fees must be paid in cash, in the local currency.

Additional services

After booking you can check flight status and verify that ticketing was successful. Change and refund options are available if the airline alters or cancels a flight. If you forget your password there’s a two-step account recovery rather than having to create a new account. A customer support team is available 24/7 by email, live chat and telephone, plus Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Conclusion

Spring Airlines is above average for a low-cost carrier. It could improve by adding more domestic and international flights, but you’d likely be pleasantly surprised booking with it, and we’d recommend it for getting around within China. If you’re hopping between Chinese cities on Spring to visit factories or markets, line up a Chinese interpreter for the legs that count.
